A bit of a light hearted post with a serious question at the end. Just back (literally just back and I live 5 mins away) from dinnering (we started at 5) with an older lady from chapel, a good display of Methodist hospitality (or maybe Im just good at the poor student I dont eat for a week face) something that I was telling my university chaplain the Methodists (generalising) tend to be very good at. However, it raised an interesting discussion that was albeit very lighthearted. I a student as a general rule should cope with being up and out so late Im usually in bed by half 10 and was exhausted just realising what time it was an older lady should apparently want to be in bed by this time and she was utterly exhalirated and was more than keen for me to have yet another cup of tea despite the fact if I stayed any longer Id fall asleep on her sofa (which would be handy far easier to get to uni in the morning from her house than mine ;) ). But that got me thinking about worship, the other thing my chaplain and I were chatting about, do we sometimes assume that certain age groups (or other social groupings) prefer a certain style of worship simply because of that group. Take age she certainly likes very lively worship while except for once a year at Spring Harvest when I do enjoy it as a treat thats about it I like a fairly traditional. Yet it would be assumed it was the other way round. And are those ideas hampering mission perhaps?
