Mid September 1994: Twenty years ago I was sitting on a beach in Spain with Simon Kenney and made a decision that would totally change the path of my life. Id just celebrated my 30th Birthday, I worked for a huge electronics company as a sales engineer. I had a reasonable salary, pension, company car, four weeks paid holiday per year and a comfortable life. However I had this recurring feeling Is this all there is to life. I had a passion for News photography, right from an early age. However, I had no training, no qualifications, only a beaten up old Nikon camera. Every week Id go to the local library and borrow two books about photography. Id consume them from cover to cover. I took every opportunity to take photos, develop films and print them. I bought a police scanner and while all my friends were in the pub friday and saturday night Id be chasing police cars around London, hoping to take photos that one day would sell. Sitting on that beach in Spain, a few days after my 30th Birthday I made what felt like a monumental decision, to quit my job and become a freelance news photographer. From that moment my life and career had direction. It has sent me all over the world photographing amazing places and people, given me some great lifelong friends and adventures. If you are sitting on that beach Id love to say to you: DO IT! take that risk, be all you can. Do what drives your passion and have passion in what you do.
