A bit of a so, so day. It rained for awhile and the boat races were stopped because the Mighty O was rising and debri was floating down the river. After awhile the boats were allowed into the water for test runs and some of these babys can really fly. They are hoping that racing can be done tomorrow but there are no guarantees. I got a brochure when I went down to see things up close and the event is called the Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta and the Henry Lauterbach Memorial. I have never heard of Henry Lauterbach so in the brochure is has a biography on him. He is a native of my home town of Norfolk and is known as one of the first creators of Hydroplane boat racing design and also one of the first boat racers. In his older years after he stopped racing himself he centered on boat design and was asked to make boats for a number of racers. As the story goes if he ever got a complaint about the design of a boat he would ask to take the boat out and race it. When he returned to the dock his time was always better than the young racer. His comment was usually, " Nothing wrong with the boat, you just need to know how to drive it. " Nothing like having confidence in your work.
