A bit of horror Micro-fiction I wrote tonight. Deer in the Headlights Herbert stopped the car about half way up the mile long driveway to his grandmother’s house. All around, the thick trees edged right up to the path, a dense growth of shrubs filling in between them, almost forming a wall of green. In the passenger seat, his girlfriend Amanda squirmed a bit, clearly uneasy. “Herby, I’m not really in the mood, you know? Lets just go watch a movie or something.” The youth said nothing in response, his hand holding onto the keys. The headlights were still on even though he had already cut off the engine. In the twin beams of light, the road could be seen to curve off to the left, though the woods were so thick that it was impossible to see more than five or so feet in. Taking his hand from the keys he place it on her thigh, right below where her cut off blue jean shorts ended. “Nu-uh. This is happening.” Her eyes widened a bit as he reached down between her legs into the floorboard and pulled up a crinkled brown paper sack. From within it he pulled out a tattered book and a dented tin flask. He set the book in his lap and unscrewed the top to the flask. The smell of liquor flooded the cramped interior of the car. Kicking it back, he took a short pull, the bitter liquid splashing down his throat with a steady burn. Clenching his teeth to fight back the urge to vomit, the youth passed it to his passenger. “Do it.” With a grimace she took it from him and tentatively complied, her eyes swimming with barely restrained tears. They sat in silence for a bit, feeling the liquid spread its warmth throughout their bodies. With a contented sigh, Herbert reached out for her hand, which after a moment of hesitation on her part, he was forced to reach over and grab. “Stop being so lame. Its gotta be your first time sometime, may as well be tonight.” She stiffened at his words but sat stonily silent save for the occasional sniffle. After a bit, her lip quivering as she spoke, she slumped back into the chair. “Just get it over with.” He grinned. Cracking open the worn book in his lap, he pulled the small book light out and began reading aloud. Ancient words crawled across his tongue raspily, leaving a sour taste in his mouth as he spoke. His breath seemed to grow thick and sulfurous, fogging up the glass. He grew increasingly louder with every sinuous sentence that flowed off the page through his lips, continuing madly along; until beside him he felt Amanda tense and then begin to scream. Looking up from the grimoire he followed her eyes to the road before them. Standing in the light of car as a young deer, still in its spots, blood dribbling from its mouth. “What the…” From its dead stop it leapt forward and charged the car. Rearing up it slammed its fragile neck into the grill so hard that they heard the sickening crack of its vertebrae crushing from within the car. Amanda’s screaming resumed, managing to drown out Herbert’s repeated frantic curses. When they at last calmed down enough, Herbert got out and moved the still form to the side of the road, his slight frame struggling to shift it. Getting back in, he cranked the car and proceeded up the drive once more, Amanda curled up and rocking in shock next to him. Her eyes were as wide as the deer’s had been, though scared looking instead of hate filled.
