A blustery onshore wind kicked up swell on the second day of the two-day carnival, testing the nearly-1000 competitors who turned up the Coromandel beach. It was the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service athletes who handled it best, easing to a comprehensive 49-point win in the overall point standings ahead of Red Beach and Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club, with Mounts George Haynes leading proceedings with a slick open ironman win over teammate Andrew Newton. Former New Zealand representatives Michael Buck and Ayla Dunlop-Barrett showed their wares as the waves came up, however. Dunlop-Barrett took out the open womens run-swim-run from Papamoas Natalie Peat, while Buck powered away in the final leg of the open mens taplin to help give his Mairangi Bay team victory.
