A brief reminder of when Team Sentinel started; On Saturday 21st September 2013, Nixon Callender declared his candidacy for President of the Public Services Association (PSA) of Trinidad and Tobago in the National Elections to be held on November 25th 2013. As the General Secretary under the Duke-led administration for the past four years, Callender has been referred to as a ‘Duke boy’, his ‘right hand man’ and several other colourful names. While he was often perceived as the man behind numerous of the ‘Duke inspired’ activities…a perception that he dispels; unknown to many, he constantly struggled to preserve the integrity and decency of the Association. Along the way, Callender’s principled stance on several issues, the consequences of some actions taken by a despotic leader and the impacts of these actions on the membership soon created a rift in the relationship, as Callender refused to continue to be a part of a directionless team. He saw the concern for membership turn into personal gain and self-aggrandisement with a persistent drift in a direction that strayed from what brought the team into office in 2009. He has now made the decision to stand up and make every effort to turn round the Association, get it moving again and be the pillar of strength that the membership needs to maintain its position in the trade union landscape. Nixon Callender is an independent-minded leader who believes in democracy and the fundamental ideals of the PSA. He has a knack for consensus building before making any decisions and he understands the struggles of the working class, the values of hard work, honesty, loyalty and service to his fellow men. He is extremely proud to be associated with a group of dynamic and diverse individuals who came together to create Team Sentinel and provide the change that the Association desperately needs. Callender’s values are shaped by what he was taught in his childhood years during which time individual responsibility, order and support for others were instilled in him…these principles have kept his feet firmly planted on the ground. Callender mingles easily with others and is most comfortable working in defence of the independence of the Association. He is known for being unafraid to address the issues of the membership and stand (or sit) with them when necessary. He has demonstrated leadership strengths and has proven himself as a person who thinks ‘out of the box’ in identifying and implementing innovative solutions for the membership of the PSA. Nixon’s areas of special interest in this election campaign include a more focused leadership, effective representation, instilling a new covenant of trust among the membership and membership benefits that will add value to the Association. Callender’s efforts to preserve the Association reflect a practical, common sense yet progressive approach by an individual who is motivated to provide new and improved avenues for every member.
