A child prodigy U . SREENIVAS (28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) , at age 12 (1981), he gave his first public concert in Chennai for the Indian Fine Arts Society.He was the first musician to use electric mandolin in Carnatic music, he even modified a difficult electric western instrument to suit the Carnatic pitch, raga system, and especially gamakas, and nuanced oscillations. After initial reluctance he found wide acceptance and critical acclaim in the coming decades Heperformed with Western artists such as John McLaughlin, Michael Brook, Trey Gunn, Nigel Kennedy, Nana Vasconcelos, and Michael Nyman, as well as with Hindustani music artists such as Hariprasad Chaurasia and Zakir Hussain His brother U. Rajesh is also an accomplished mandolin player. Srinivas married U. Sree, daughter of an IAS officer in 1994.They have a son.The couple divorced in 2012. Srinivas was the recipient of the Padma Shri in 1998 for his contribution to the arts. For all the flourish of his mandolin strings on stage, the various setbacks in his personal life are enough to tug at heart strings
