A clear case of vilification, only acceptable because its of Christianity. Family First demands cancellation of Adelaide Fringe show Come Heckle Christ Dear Supporters, We have received many complaints about the Adelaide Fringe show ‘Come Heckle Christ’. We are appalled by the content of this show, as shown in various promotions and reviews, and regard it as offensive to all Christians. It is especially wrong that the show is a part of the Fringe, and as such receives the benefit of active promotion funded by taxpayers. Whilst we were conscious that we did not want to increase attendances through creating additional publicity for the show through controversy, we decided that it was necessary to demand that the show be removed from the Fringe Festival publicly. Family First has therefore written a strong letter to the Premier, who is also Minister of the Arts, insisting that taxpayers funds should not be spent promoting an event that causes offence to so many South Australians. We pointed out that this Sunday is ‘Christian Heritage Sunday’ celebrating 226 years since the Gospel was brought to these shores. If it were any other group that was vilified in this way, the government would take a different view. We demanded that the act be pulled from the Fringe Festival. We have also campaigned in the media, but there has been little interest by television stations. Rob Brokenshire was reported in The Advertiser on Saturday and the Sunday Mail as saying that the show was offensive and should be cancelled. Dennis Hood spoke on ABC radio on Sunday to the same effect. We continue to seek media on this issue. Whilst we support freedom of speech, there can be no doubt that the whole point of this show is to cause offence to Christianity and its founder Jesus Christ, through ridicule. We simply cannot sit back and do nothing! Indications are that the show has no real artistic merit. It should not proceed at all, but especially not with government support. We suggest that you contact your local MP and the major sponsor of The Fringe (Bank SA) to show your concern that this deeply offensive show can be presented at all, especially with active promotion at taxpayers’ expense through government funding for the Fringe Festival. Please ask your friends to do the same. Members of Parliament who condone such offensive material should not receive support at the upcoming election. The Family First Team Its time to vote for your Family First.
