A comprehensive study that provides good building practices, that can be adopted by all concerned, can reduce untoward incidents in the future. Towards this end, the Works Ministry has done a study that is nearly completed and will be ready for discussion in December among stakeholders, including the state governments. Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof said a group led by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) undertook the study a few months back to look at the entire construction industry in the country. He said a good building practices package included standard of procedure, human capital, construction materials, law and enforcement, all aimed at promoting and safeguarding the country’s construction industry. “These are subject to approval by industry players and state governments,” he said, when asked to comment on the collapsed roof of a mosque in Bukit Tunggal, Terengganu, yesterday. Mosque bilal Mat Man found that the foyer’s ceiling had collapsed when he went to open the mosque at 5am. Fadillah said his ministry was aware that Terengganu has had a number of collapsed roof cases, including at mosques and its state stadium, and viewed these incidents seriously. “The mosque (in Bukit Tunggal) is a state government project, not that of the Federal Government. “But since a mishap has happened, it falls under the purview of the Human Resource Ministry because the Department of Occupational, Safety and Health (DOSH) is under that ministry. “DOSH is responsible for carrying out the inspection and charges. “As for the Works Ministry, we will send our experts to do an audit and find out why it happened,” he said. He hoped stakeholders in Terengganu would consider adopting the recommendations made by the study to address whatever shortcomings that were being faced by the construction industry in the state.
