A container ferrying 534kg of scales of an endangered mammal were intercepted at the port of Mombasa. Apart from pangolin scales, the container also had 686 pieces of ivory weighing 1.9 tonnes Kenya Revenue Authority and their Kenya Wildlife Service officials said they could not establish where the animals were captured and killed, although they confirmed that the 40-foot container came by rail from Uganda. The pangolin scales are the first cache of the kind, through the port of Mombasa which of late has seen a surge of the number of containers seized with ivory and other wildlife products. The container intercepted on Saturday was destined to a vegetable oil manufacturing company in Turkey, said KRA’s southern region senior assistant commissioner Fatma Yusuf.
