A country requires the establishment of national defense to achieve peace and stability; it needs culture and education to accomplish harmony and civilization; it takes economic establishment to attain wealth and affluence and it requires establishment of a transportation system for there to be prosperity and development. A person needs to establish him or herself so that the path of life is broadened and the meaning of life can flourish. To establish oneself is to strengthen oneself, to develop one’s potential, to grow and mature, to establish confidence, to revise one’s views, to nurture causes and conditions, to create opportunities, and to build up one’s career and success. In society, most people seem to have lost themselves, they all seek external help. If a person relies completely on others and has no inner strength, once help is gone he will lose the ability to move on. Therefore one should establish oneself, to be one’s own engineer in life and live life to its fullest. However, there are people who do not know how to establish themselves, but rather sabotage and destroy themselves by ruining their health, wasting time, failing to make affinities, giving up opportunities, being lazy and slothful, becoming pessimistic and unrealistic. A few years ago, in the pursuit of a gold medal, Tonya Harding hired someone to assault her competitor, but in the end, she not only failed to win, she got herself into serious litigation. Her scheme to strike others down in order to achieve success not only hurt others but also ruined herself. Therefore, in order to establish oneself, one should start by establishing one’s mind. In the Chinese strategy for battle, it is believed that “establishing the mind is more important than establishing defense”. To establish one’s mind is to establish right thoughts, right views, ethical values and moral principles. It is important to establish one’s confidence, to be positive about one’s knowledge, ability, initiatives and compassion. Furthermore, one should also have self-respect, self-strength and self-initiative. One should often review one’s own morals, speech and responsibility, and striving for their perfection is the ultimate goal in establishing oneself. It is imperative that one should be the first to shoulder life’s burden but the last to enjoy its benefits, instead of aiming to ruin others in order to achieve one’s goals. As we can see in an election, the candidates take every opportunity to attack their opponents and engage in mudslinging generally before they even publish any constructive platform for their candidacy. Under these circumstances, one could not help but worry about the future of the country.
