A couple of ad hoc tit bit posts before I go.... Tips When Travelling In Greece 1) Never try and plan a bus journey on the websites! Every municipality of the Ktel network has its own site. They are not updated and very complicated to navigate. 2) When trying to find out timetables, prices and buy tickets, do not listen to locals, anyone on the telephone or even the lady in the ticket office! They will give you three different departure times...so until you have a foot on the bus and are handing over your ticket to the driver...BEWARE! 3) You cannot purchsed a ticket from A to B if it involves a change of bus. You must buy as you go. Ticket offices (and indeed bus stations) are in the most unlikely places...and glass door next to a cafe, a hotel reception, a bit of scrub land with an A4 hand written sign! Keep your eyes and ears open! 4) When someone tells you a journey is 50 mins this can be anything from an hour to three hours! Also, distance in Greece is different, so if a signpost says 100m, your desired location may be up to 2kms away! 5) Dont get too excited if someone tells you there is a fast road to your destination...This normally just means it is tarmaced! 6) The only real train is between Piraeus and Korinthos. Other destinations may mention a station but these are normally overgrown with the odd rusting train pulled in there! 7) When hiring a car, shop around and make sure you have all insurances. Ensure your car is topped up with petrol as stations can be few and far between. Best to have a GPS just in case you end up being sent up a dusty single track mountain road by the smiling locals! 8) Mentioning petrol...check out prices as you often have a station on either side of the road and they can be up to 25c a litre different! 9) Travel with an open mind and go with the flow...you will have to push and shove, kick people out of your pre - booked seats, ensure passengers are not taking your luggage off, expect buses to be on average half an hour late, the driver will smoke if he wishes and dole out change and tickets whilst steering with his elbows and characters you will meet are a plenty! 10) Ferries are fun! Sunbathe on deck or sit in the air conditioned lounge and enjoy as you sail past stunning scenery and islands! All ferries have a bar but thy can be expensive so feel free to BYO! 11) Enjoy! Remember, if you dont like somewhere...just embark a bus, ferry, bike, quad or donkey and move on!
