A couple of weekends ago Susan and I were driving home separately but both happened to be listening to South Carolina Public Radios hour-long broadcast of The Peoples Pharmacy for 16 Aug 2014. The weekly guest was Dr. Eric Westman of Duke University Lifestyle Medical Clinic, who explained in interesting and logical detail the benefits of a ketogenic diet that employs lots of fat and protein and few carbohydrates (including grains). His book New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great further explains the research behind this approach to eating. The bottom line is that Sue Ballard Hilton and I both had an epiphany that afternoon and have embarked on a more sensible approach to eating at age 60-plus: No carbs right now for her, but some carbs for me because of my long bicycle rides. Amazingly, after only a week and a half her headaches have diminished and weve both lost weight. I realize there are a zillion different diet plans out there and that we often get conflicting advice from doctors, some of whom dont really seem to understand the science of metabolism. What works for one person might not for another--and heaven knows people can be insanely zealous about various dietary approaches--but Susan and I have carefully researched and are committed to this particular plan for the long run. If youd like to listen yourself on-line, the podcast of Dr. Westmans remarks is at peoplespharmacy/2014/08/16/958-flipping-the-food-pyramid-upside-down/ (You can also download it to iTunes for later listening.)
