A couple of years ago, I wrote a note expressing my thoughts on an incident that occurred in Al-Barka, Basilan. If you are familiar with the incident or take the time to read the note, the similarities between what happened then and what transpired in the recent encounter in Maguindanao are readily apparent. And so, while prayers go out to all those who were killed, my call to the public, the media, and fellow peacemakers remain the same. Let us not steer away from our path towards building peace. Because while most of us can easily share our piece without much concern of the consequences that follow, those caught between the crossfires stand to lose their homes, means of living, and even their lives, should violence begin again.
