A couple years ago I was standing at Valerie Simpsons white grand piano, at her crib in Manhattan, while she played and sang the arrangement she wanted me to learn on Im Every Woman. It was just the two of us, and when I say she sang, I mean full blast, like her life depended on it - like she was at Radio City. Then I played for her; she told me what she needed to hear in one spot, and once again she was full blast; doing that little Valerie dance - and that was that. We talked a little about Nick, and loss, and love, then she actually helped me put my coat on. I told her I knew this was just another day for her, but it was an amazing honor for me. Funny, but she didnt even do the tune at the gig. She just sat down beside me at the keyboard and said, Im feeling something else - and launched into- Aint no mountain high, aint no valley low... Im playing at her club, The Sugar Bar, tomorrow. It would be nice to see her again, even though theres no way she remembers me. She was a major influence, and Ill never forget that night - thats why Im telling you.
