A culture of journalism that facilitates open, transparent and accountability discourse among citizens and their governors should be preserved at all costs. And this is what South Africa seem to enjoy as compared to Ruanda’s reporters that live in fear, or Zambia that face the space for free press shrinking. In the meanwhile, the debate is raging between South Africans and SABC service delivery as a public broadcaster. Some argue that there is lack of a strong independent board, the newsroom is not open to debate, but full of fear, truth is compromised, content is biased, etc. That long are the days when citizen accessed incredible educational dramas and current affairs programmes. South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Acting Chief of Operations Officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng defends SABC and calls anti-arguments as unrepresentative of the true SABC. But he champions statutory regulation like the legal fraternity is regulated. Common people, experts and varying stakeholders question the credibility of the position of the SABC Acting COO.
