A day after the publication of the appointment of William Schabas, who is to head an inquiry into the Gaza operation by the UN Human Rights Council, admitted in an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 News that “there are many cases of double standards at the UN.” Schabas stated these things when confronted with questions about the American offensive in Iraq, Russian actions in Chechnya, and the stationing of NATO forces in Libya, as thousands of innocent civilians were killed in these conflicts and not even one investigation was opened. To the contrary, two were held against Israel within two years, despite the existance of significantly more civilian deaths in some cases. “The fact that there were no investigations carried out regarding the atrocities in specific areas can be explained by the political balance and the relative strength of the players,” Schabas stated. “It is very unfortunate, but this is the situation.” Schabas warned that it is better for Israel to cooperate with his committee, because the accusations presented include “using an excessive amount of force, the degree of harm and identifying military targets.” He stated that Israel previously addressed this issue: “Israel has released statements saying it acted in self-defense and didn’t fire at civilians. It’s one thing to state it. It’s another thing to examine the individual cases and to see whether the statements are accurate.” He stressed that if Israel does not do so, “there will be a one sided picture of the events, unfortunately.”
