A day in the life of a NICU mum... Today has turned into a bit of a struggle. Harper is doing fantastic and I am so incredibly proud of her for handling another reduction in her CPAP pressure. Shes an absolute champion. Me on the other hand? Its a bit tough when you finally get 5 minutes to sit down, eat your dinner, and realise that the one thing youve been trying to not acknowledge has inevitably happened - youre all alone. All your mum friends have left. Your mums gone. Your husband only gets to come down once a week, sometimes once a fortnight. Theres so many new faces coming and going and even though their stories are similar to yours, theyre not there to make you feel better or help you get through your situation. Half of them dont even smile or say hello. Theyre under the same stress youre under, heck theyre under the same ROOF youre under yet somehow, youre invisible to them. Your friends are there for you but they will never truly understand the situation youre in unless theyve walked this path themselves. You know they care, but they know theres nothing they can do for you, your husband or your baby to help you get through this. The only comfort you have is being able to get up every morning and go and see your baby through a glass window for what has turned in to be a regular 12 hour shift. You forget to eat. You forget to sleep. You forget your medication because you too were sick. You know its not going to be like this forever, but youve been doing this for so long that the light at the end of the tunnel dims. Then you remember how there are so many people worse off in the world than you, so you stop being selfish, get up and wash your dishes and head off to the hospital to see your beautiful little miracle who stole your heart... Thank you to whoever is reading this, just had to get it out there... 💖
