A dear friend of mine posted this on another page and with her permission I would like to share this with you. Its about teeth and gliders. Denise Rainwaters January 4 at 6:07pm Good morning and happy 2015 to everyone out there! Its been awhile since a PSA (public SUGGIE announcement) has been posted on this forum, and the time has come to break the silence! The topic I want to enlighten you on is one that has happened QUITE frequently for me....dental issues. A lot of questions have been asked, e.g., what causes it, the symptoms of it, procedures that a vet may take about it, and what we as glider slaves can do to prevent it. First: what causes it? If I had a hard and fast answer, I could be VERY FAMOUS...Ive had more than my fair share of gliders whove been taken to the vet for extractions! Things that I seem to be able to track down so far are these: (1) I have a lot of rehomes and rescues who were on HORRIBLE diets before they came here. And if a female is pregnant and on a horrible diet before I get them, guess what? That raises the chances of the joey having the same problem (or more). (2) It is HIGHLY LIKELY that this is a hereditary thing. It happens in humans and other animals, why cant it happen in gliders? As a matter of fact, a LOT of medical issues are passed down from generation to generation! If mom and/or dad have bad teeth, the odds again go through the ceiling that the babies will too, (I saw an entire family suffer this: rescue situation, bad diet, mom & dad & elder siblings all got it....even the youngest joey who came OOP a year after the diet was improved had it too!) (3) Simple, plain old age. Lets face it, time marches on for ALL of us! My latest trip to the vets office with a dental issue was with one of my senior gliders whos 13 years old. Hes been on APPROVED diets all his life, has had everything short of getting his teeth brushed daily....didnt matter. So.....since its almost UNPREVENTABLE, how can you tell if your glider is having an issue and needs to see the vet? There are several symptoms, but Ill break it down into 3 obvious signs: 1. The swollen face. Since there are over 30 teeth in that little mouth (ranging from the 4 easy-to-see ones in front all the way down to ones that are no bigger than this, literally ---> o
