A dog bite story in the news. There are many, but this one is being posted because: 1. The dog happens to be my heart breed. Id like to believe its a mistake, but....any dog can bite. 2. The dog looks worried, shows some stress signs and barks/lunges at the camera - which is completely understandable - but this also makes a fear-related bite credible. 3. The shelter worker incorrectly calls him an Australian Cattle Dog. Not even close... 4. The implication is that the dog ran out of his yard and bit an 8 year old girl because he was being protective. This is unlikely; the most likely motivation was fear. And on top of this, the assumption that this breed is more protective than a Pomeranian (thanks Susan Gleeson) :). They can be equally protective. Or, as in this case, equally fearful. 5. The owner insists the dog is tame - presumably she means that he is gentle - but he did bite. Whether he should be labeled a dangerous dog is a difficult question. He might not need a muzzle at all times, but he certainly needs to be contained more securely without denying that he can bite someone (again). 6. There is no word more frequently misspelled than shepherd. :) Bites are common, and most can be prevented. I do hope it works out so that both children and the dog are safe.
