A dynamic talk by Chicago educator José Lopez this evening, not - TopicsExpress

A dynamic talk by Chicago educator José Lopez this evening, not just about himself as a student and than teacher at the secondary and collegiate levels – as well as helping establish the first schools dedicated to educating Latino students – nor his brother Oscars service in Vietnam and subsequent activism and imprisonment, but also the history of Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans here on the mainland, and the religious, pseudo-scientific and cultural bases of racism and colonialism, both internal and external. A couple of his most salient points were that that creativity is not possible for the oppressor, who is too busy trying to maintain control, but only the oppressed who is seeking freedom, and that the teacher hears the student, but usually doesnt listen. Of course some may dismiss this as the usual professorial radicalism, but it really went beyond that to provide a valuable perspective, not just for the largely younger audience in attendance, but to those of us of all ages.
