A federal court of appeals has ordered the state of California to release another 10,000 convicted criminals from its state prison system. This is in addition to the 46,000 inmates already released by court order since 2006. The reason? Alleged “overcrowding.” Are inmates being warehoused and stacked like cordwood inside prison cells? No. Instead, California inmates allegedly aren’t receiving sufficient medical and “mental health” care because of the number of inmates in the system. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has criticized the “terrible injunction” ordering this latest mass release. California’s Democratic Governor Jerry Brown has denounced the order as creating a public-safety crisis. All to no avail. Inevitably, many of these released inmates will make their way to Arizona. Here is yet another reminder of why it’s so important to reform our courts and make them accountable to the people.
