Lets be lucid: my grudge against those who view a just social order as one in which all humans have an equal opportunity to accede to dominant positions in relations of stark hierarchy, unequally distributed risk, and vastly inegalitarian resource distributions is not that they are realists. It is that this is probably one of the worst utopias in modern history: first, because it is impossible to imagine that one could create such a meritocracy without durably attenuating the relations of domination, inequality, and obedience that it takes for granted; and second because I believe this sort of impossible utopianism actually participates in an even worse realism by excluding more desirable impossible utopias.
