For more details about benefits, please visit: juneau.org/personnel/benefits.php RESPONSIBILITIES Under general direction, performs skilled firefighting and provides basic and advanced emergency medical care. Firefighter- Paramedics are skilled firefighters as well as advanced emergency medical technicians. While the work is performed under the general direction of the Fire Captain, Firefighter-Paramedics must exercise independent judgment to assess and quickly respond to emergency situations. Incumbents perform advanced emergency medical procedures within the scope of their licensure under the supervision of a sponsoring physician and serve as the lead Emergency Medical Services Officer on medical calls. In addition to the typical tasks required for the appropriate fire suppression classifications, Firefighter – Paramedics perform Advanced Life Support (ALS), pre-hospital emergency medical care and emergency medical assistance to victims of accidents, injuries or illnesses. Typical responsibilities include the following: Serves as lead Emergency Medical Services officer on medical calls; assesses patients condition and determines appropriate treatment; oversees patient care reports. Extricates trapped victims; provides advanced emergency medical care in accordance with regulations governing Mobil Intensive Care Paramedics; accompanies seriously injured or sick individuals to the hospital in order to stabilize their condition; provides oral report to the emergency room physician. Participates in on-going training to maintain and enhance firefighting skills and to stay abreast of new medical practices and procedures. Maintains Firefighter certificate and Paramedic license. Provides training in medical procedures to other department staff. Participates in fire hazard and fire prevention inspections and pre-planning surveys; record inspection results; responds to inquiries; provides advice and assistance. Participates in the departments public education programs. Drives and operate ARFF equipment, when assigned. Maintains assigned firefighting and emergency medical equipment and apparatus. Maintains logs and records and completes reports. Performs related work as required. CONTINUED ON BACK SIDE JOB NO. 15-511R- Reissue CAPITAL CITY FIRE & RESCUE - FIRE July 2, 2014 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School graduation or possession of a GED certificate. An Associate or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is highly desirable but not required. Experience: None Other: Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment. A valid Alaska Drivers License at time of appointment and for continued employment. Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter I or an equivalent certification as determined by the Fire Chief. At time of application either: 1) Valid license from the State of Alaska as a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic; OR 2) Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an EMT-Paramedic AND evidence of successful completion of a 480 hour paramedic internship; OR 3) Equivalent licensure in another state, province or territory. (Note: appointment will be made conditionally pending successfully completion of the written and practical examination for emergency medical technician-paramedic administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians by date of appointment.) NOTE: Appointment to Firefighter – Paramedic positions will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the psychological assessment and the medical evaluation. Continued employment and advancement opportunities: Continued employment requires completion of the on-the-job training program, meeting or exceeding performance standards, and the following conditions: The employee must be able to receive and continue to maintain licensure as a State of Alaska Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic to perform the duties of this position.
