A fellow New Zealander in a group I am part of on Facebook, posted the following with regard to the question of New Zealand being and remaining nuclear-free: I still cant see the point of being nuke free with it every around it only makes us look like a bunch of uneducated idiots. Meet dont need nuclear power but radiation is every round us ATM which is the dangerous bit about nuclear power. And waste wish we would have 5 kg of it every 10 years if the whole of nz was powered by it. (I am going to have to politely assume hes type this on a Smartphone, with an inadequate predictive text feature) Aside from my challenge in deciphering his message, what I understood from him somewhat surprised me. It makes me wonder if this is a common opinion among New Zealanders? I do hope not. In case more than just this one fellow share this view, I wrote the following response (in an effort to reduce the numbers of uneducated idiots he mentioned): > > > > > > I guess it all depends on what kind of education you are referring to James. My education leads me to determine that the more countries who take a nuclear free policy, the better. If New Zealand is a lone-wolf in that regard, so be it. Yes, relatively speaking, the world is awash in radioactive isotopes released through the activities of Man. But no, NZ experiences NOTHING like the radioactive fallout levels Japan is currently experiencing and will probably be dealing with for a very long time into the foreseeable future. Or the levels of radiation Chernobyl and many parts of Europe and the Middle East STILL experience as a result of the meltdown there in 1986. - - - - A quick quote from Wikipedia: The explosion at the power station (in Chernobyl) and subsequent fires inside the remains of the reactor resulted in the development and dispersal of a radioactive cloud which drifted not only over Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, but also over the European part of Turkey, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic and Slovakia), Yugoslavia (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Macedonia), Poland, Estonia, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France (including Corsica),[5] Spain, Canada[6] and the United Kingdom (UK).[7][8] In fact, the initial evidence in other countries that a major release of radioactive material had occurred came not from Soviet sources, but from Sweden, where on 28 April[9] workers at the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant (approximately 1100 km from the Chernobyl site) were found to have radioactive particles on their clothing. - - - - Why would WE, THE PEOPLE of New Zealand want to increase the liklihood of exposing ourselves to such a fiasco as that? (above) Its a far cry from the the radiation thats around us ATM which you mention. Isnt it? Just because humanity in other countries has increased the level of background radiation New Zealanders experience, does that mean we should concede to go along with the global corporate agenda of the nuclear industry? We experience background radiation from the Earth itself, and the Sun, but I dont see that as a particularly valid justification for Man to release additional radiactive isotopes onto the surface and atmosphere of the Earth. Do you?
