A few days ago I mentioned that something really nice about life in China in the summer months is the makeshift sidewalk cafés that are ubiquitous in every city here as soon as its warm enough to sit outside in the evening. This is a good example of what that looks like, and how just ordinarily pleasant it is, especially after a day of being out and about in the heat. This is Yan Jing, who did the video editing for our TEDx event, his brother Yan Xiao, who is home visiting from Suzhou (imagine that we live in St. Louis and big bro works in a Silicon Valley) where I learned that he works in sales for a company that puts together custom robotics installations for Chinese factories made with robotic components sourced almost exclusively from the US, Japan, and Germany. And of course, me (head still wet from swimming, which was a big hit with the little boy), my partner, and the aforementioned little boy, uncharacteristically tuckered out, it would seem, from swimming, and in a rather contemplative mood just chilling at his own table thinking about who knows what. On a side note, I asked the big brother (the robotics systems salesman) whats the coolest robotic related thing hes seen at a trade show or whatever. He said suits like the guy wears in Avatar. Real ones, not just models of a concept. Oh, and if you want to know one more nice thing about these outdoor cafés, the total bill for our long leisurely dinner was about twenty bucks.
