A few days ago, I saw a post commenting on the GOPs apparent drift to the right in recent years; https://facebook/dhgorski/posts/10152025902209744 I share that perception, and I know I am not alone in being saddened that one of our two major parties, instead of playing the important role of rational balance to the other party, has slipped into abject, barking wackaloonery. But wait, Jimbobboy, I can hear you say, Isnt that just your impression? Well, thats exactly it -- those who make a business of studying these things can objectively assess where politicians stand with respect to their contemporaries and also with politicians of other times, and guess what? Its not just my imagination or yours. Republicans of today are really, truly way far to the right of where Republicans were even as recently as 1996 -- so much so that a Republican congressman slightly more liberal than the modern median would have qualified as a fire-breathing 90th percentile conservative in Newts day. Democrats, in contrast, have undergone no such shift. What this means for the near future of American politics is left as an exercise for the student. voteview/blog/?p=953
