A few days ago we mentioned a couple of A&AA Directors were at an allergy conference in Washington DC. We also mentioned we have a 28 yr old male representing an allergy organisation from Europe who has milk, peanut, tree nut, shellfish and sesame allergy. Another attendee has an almond and kiwi fruit allergy and yet another has a milk allergy. Last night, 8 of us, including our friends with food allergies went out for dinner!! We were not sure whether we were being brave or stupid dining with so many with so many food allergies! Ordering food took somewhat longer than it usually does.....Were we nervous? Yes we were! The staff were great, they listened, went through less risky menu choices with those who were allergic. Our meals came out soon after and we (quietly thinking.....oh is this too much of a risk?) ate our meals and laughed and had such a good time. No problems for any of those with us. We did it and how good was it for those with food allergy to share food and have fun with others with food allergy. We need these good news stories! Food allergy is manageable....yes it takes time, we get anxious, we do some thing differently BUT we can still have fun and enjoy life with planning and care :-)
