A few months ago, someone, who has been dancing most of her life, - TopicsExpress

A few months ago, someone, who has been dancing most of her life, told me that unless you begin by a certain age (I dont remember exactly what she said but something like 11 or 15), you cant learn to dance with both technique and feeling. More recently, another woman told me that she had always thought that unless you had studied ballet as a child you could never learn turnout. Other people seem to assume you cant become good unless youre a professional (as in earning enough to feed yourself). Ive also been told that only Argentines have tango in their blood and its impossible for other people to really understand it. Others have said Americans (as in the USA Americans) cant dance or said that Russians or orientals are better partners. People have told me theres nothing I can ever do to become good enough that they might enjoy dancing with me. Perhaps theyre right and perhaps theyre wrong, but as someone who started to take dancing as a serious (as in many hours a week) pastime in my 40s, I have to reject any assertions that it is impossible for me to succeed and find a way to do it despite my handicaps and Id really appreciate it if, instead of telling me that failure is preordained, some of these people would look, with an open mind, at what Ive accomplished so far and help me figure out how I, and others like me, can achieve more.
