A few more birds made with the Crowell influence. I think the pure artist approach to decoy painting that Mr. Crowell achieved on his decoys is unsurpassed in decoy painting still today! I always pay tribute to Mr. Crowells painting style, as it is the foundation for my decoy painting...especially for my highly detailed smoothie painting. Its amazing how much you can learn by studying the works and techniques of the classic masters whether it be paintings, sculpture or decoy sculptures. Mr. Crowell, besides mastering painting, also mastered the carved animated bird poses....and his preening poses are a good example of incredibly eye-appealing sculpture! Here are a few I carved to pay tribute to Mr. Crowells preening poses and his incredible painting style. The Black Duck honors what I believe to be Mr. Crowells best decoy that his hands ever produced and my second favorite decoy of all behind Shang Wheelers classic buried bill sleeper Black Duck! Also shown are my interpretations of a Crowell influenced, preening Canada Goose, hen Common Eider (if he had carved one full-sized and in this pose), Whimbrel and Red-breasted Merganser.
