A few more views of the fall colors at high elevation in the park. Most of the current color change is confined to the elevations above 5,000 feet, where the climate is colder. At lower elevations, leaves are still generally green, although dogwoods, sourwoods and a few other species are developing fall color. In the middle and lower elevations, fall colors typically become vibrant in mid to late October. So, if youre coming to the park in the next few days, plan a trip to the higher elevations to see the best color now: Clingmans Dome Road, Newfound Gap Road, and Heintooga Ridge Road. High elevation hikes along the Appalachian Trail from Newfound Gap to Charlies Bunion (strenuous), or on Forney Ridge Trail from Clingmans Dome to Andrews Bald (moderate in difficulty) will be good choices.
