A few of the many events that happened this week in World War II: In 1943 (July 19th) the 9th Air Force attacked air fields and rail yards in Rome. In 1944 (18th) the XIX Corps captured what was left of Saint Lo, ending the post-D-Day hedgerow fighting there, and on the 20th German officers enacted Operation Valkyrie in a failed attempt to assassinate Hitler. In 1945 (16th) the first A-bomb test occurred at the Trinity test site in Alamogordo, NM; that same day the Allies began the two-week Potsdam Conference.
