A few of us were discussing horror author Poppy Z. Brite, and I was reminded of this place in the North Carolina woods known as The Devils Tramping Ground. It is said that Satan himself paced this very spot as he hatched his diabolical plans for the world and mankind, and when he grew tired, he rested on a nearby tree stump. Poppy mentioned this place in his novels Lost Souls and Drawing Blood. Coincidentally, The Devils Tramping Ground is right near my house. I take my dogs walking there. Its quite peaceful. Although I have to admit, one night recently while I was driving near there, I caught a glimpse of a dark figure on the side of the road. It wasnt a human figure, although it was bipedal. Fluid, shadowy, translucent, it immediately unsettled me. If that wasnt enough, the volume of my car radio increased without me touching the knob to a point at which it was deafening, and I was forced to turn off the radio completely. True story; I wish it wasnt.
