A few pics from Big South Fork 2014. This was my first 50 since 08. RA took me out of the long distances for five years. This year Im riding healthy for the first time ever - and with my teen daughter next to me. As I remembered - BSF did not disappoint! Camping field a challenge for 4 wheel drives and little room for late comers. So we found a tiny spot and saddle club picketed off the trailer. No spot for tent - so slept in SUV. Id read about the no water spickets, so we tested out the idea of contractor trash bags in our 30g buckets. Water made the trip!! We entered the Sat 50. My daughters first ever - and so for both horses. (Ones done several LDs) Ended up rider optioning daughters mount after 30 miles. Big built dark colored mare - hard time cooling down. Didnt think shed pull through the hardest leg - and daughter was tired of riding already :) My mount was riled up as her buddy sower herd mate kept calling - but settled down to work the second my butt hit the bareback pad. Four of us ended up joining up at mile 40. Good thing we did! Down in the hole crossing creeks and very rough rock - we got hit with a major tstorm! We were trying to get to a deep water crossing before it went even higher than 14.2 (that was the description Friday riders gave it) didnt make it in time. Between the deluge, yellow jacket swarms and praying my little water loving made could lead the group safely through the deep rushing water - it was an epic loop! Ending in the slippery steep trail up out of the gorge! All four of us made it and passed VC. But itwas a third loop challenge none of us will soon forget!
