A few questions Ive just filled out for an up and coming magazine - TopicsExpress

A few questions Ive just filled out for an up and coming magazine about my project Untitled Streets if youre interested, have a read :) 1) Name, age and profession Cat Morgan, 21, Fashion Concepts and Communication student at Leeds College of Art 2) Tell me a little about Untitled Streets Untitled Streets a project about style, personality, identity and age. Which sounds like a lot of things when I think about it, but when I capture street portraits it is very simple. It is simply what stands out to me when I see someone on the street. Everybody has a character and everybody has something unique about them. This is the challenge of the project, to capture and research what it is that makes someone unique. The exciting part? I never know who I’m going to photograph. 3) Do you think Leeds has its own personality? Definitely, Leeds is full of character. A place of arts, music and many places to explore, there is a lot of personality in this city but that’s what’s great about Leeds. People welcome you with open arms. 4) Are you interested in documenting your subjects personalities? For sure. This is one of the main points of the project! I’m taking portrait photographs, but I’m also interested in talking to the participants and finding out a bit more about them. This gives the project a bit of a narrative, and just to make people smile because it is all real. 5) You photograph a wide rang of people, (from young to old) is this because you feel everyone has their own story to tell? Of course, I feel everyone has something to say about them. But it is difficult when I have been rejected from people to not have their photo taken. Simply because they don’t get what I’m doing, and that’s not to offend anyone, but they’re obviously just not comfortable or think I’m strange for approaching them. And that’s a shame. I photograph a lot of the older generation, because that’s what I notice more when I’m out and about. I feel they have a lot to say, that’s if they are approachable, and it is interesting to know what they think of fashion today. My whole message for this project is to explore the older generation, as they are not recognised enough. I want the message to be that because you’re getting older, that doesn’t mean you should feel invisible. I want my photographs to reflect this and celebrate older men and women. 6) Are your photos unretouched/unedited to an extent (minus the black and white)? If so, why? Does this give the photos a more raw feel to them? My recent colour portraits are not; I’m aiming to just leave these unedited as I don’t think they really need it! Some of the black and white ones are, but it is literally just turning up the brightness and playing with the contrast a little, which only takes a few seconds. Yes I guess raw is the right word, I just like a little more darkness to black and white photos I suppose! I’m very much inspired by Street photography in New York from the 1940s through to the 1960s so I guess that’s what I like to do in my own photos. 7) Do you aim to publish this project in a book? I do which is an exciting prospect. My aim is to contact a few stores in Leeds in the New Year, which would be interested in my project. 8) What are your goals as a photographer after you graduate? Ha, hard question as anything can happen. I’m very lucky that I only live 40 minutes from Central London back home, so the likelihood is finding work in London. My dream would be to work for a magazine and work on the editorial shoots and be really part of the team, the thought of being freelance scares me a bit, I think I would rather work for a company first.
