A few weeks ago Myron came to Silver Room looking for a cross. He found something he liked but when he realized he was a little short on dough he asked could he make a partial payment and take care of the balance when he got his check. Jenny the manager told him it was fine and he promised to come in later that week. Fast forward toTuesday of this week. Jenny and I hear him call her name from the sidewalk. A woman walking past holds the door for him and I pull him inside. ( hes in a wheelchair). Jenny I came to pay you your money he says without hesitation. I am a man of my word and I dont care how cold it is outside I was coming today to pay you. (It was 3 degrees and -10 windchill Tuesday morning. Im sorry was late coming to pay you but I got some bad news. I was diagnosed with leukemia and I have four months to live. I just wanted to say thank you for trusting me. This cross means a lot to me and im going to give it to my sister once I pass. We chat for awhile and he asked me to take him to the nearest bus stop. I push him down the block but its cold and snowy and I feel bad leaving him there so I asked him where he was going. He said he was going to Jewel. I told him it was not a problem it was only a few blocks away. He told me his life story on our 10 minute walk. Growing up in Cabrini, 6 prison stints, life as a pimp, father at age 15, never holding a job, abusive relationships etc. He said he wanted to live these last 4 months the way he should have lived his entire life. With honor. We get to Jewel and he asked me to take him to the flower section. He was buying flowers for a girlfriend from 10 years ago he had wronged. She liked roses. He stopped by today to bring me this letter and a gift for taking him to Jewel. He has 4 months to live and hes out in the cold and snow to bring a stranger a gift. Im not sure how I would be handling his situation. I would only hope to have the dignity he has in the face of death. Trying to make up for lost time and healing old wounds. Just wanted to say Thank you to Myron for coming in on this cold snowy day. Thank you for the letter. I really needed that today. Thank you for your dignity and honor.
