A few weeks ago, when Philip Seymour Hoffman died, I spent the week after listening to interviews with him because I am apparently the type of carrion that favours grey mush. A lot of it was awkward promo blah, but one stuck with me. It was a afterfilm Q&A somewhere cosmopolitan. A woman in the audience with a metallic voice wanted to know if he purposefully chose hard roles. He gave that wolfish smile that almost seemed in conflict with the rest of his face, thought about it, looked suddenly tired and - eventually - drawled to do anything well is hard.
