A few weeks before my son’s preschool let out for the summer, he was able to participate in a trike-a-thon to benefit a children’s hospital. The teachers had done a wonderful job explaining to the kids that it would be fun to ride their bikes, but they would be raising money in the process to help “make sick kids better.” The day of the trike-a-thon arrived. Twenty-five precious little preschoolers took off in giant loops around the parking-lot. Parents took photos and waved. Grandparents came to watch and clap with each little lap. When it was over, the school invited the onlookers to stay for a hotdog lunch. The teacher began by thanking the parents for allowing the children to participate, and then went on a bit about end of school announcements. I could see my son near the front of the line start by raising his hand, and then, feeling overlooked; he began to shout, “Mrs. Casey! Mrs. Casey!” “SHHHhhh! Hey! Shhh! Buddy!” I’m whisper yelling across the room full of parents and kids slightly embarrassed of his behavior. It is pretty out of character for him to have an outburst like that or try to interrupt someone while they are speaking. When his teacher had finished, she let him ask his question. I couldn’t imagine what had been so important that he couldn’t wait. What was burning in his little heart that couldn’t possibly be put on hold one more minute? “Mrs. Casey! Did we do it? Did we make the kids at the hospital better?!” Sometimes, I get caught up in the motions of my day. I am busy keeping our household in motion and raising sweet babies. But every now and then, something reminds me of the type of heart that should motivate even the most routine of activities. Lord, show me how to always have a heart for others – in everything I do.
