A few years ago I had planned to produce a documentary with a brother of mine who was studying Film and Television Production. The documentary was to be centred around the history of Pedi people, where the king and chiefs originate originate from, who is the paramount king, how we asserted ourselves during old age wars, what was our influence and how people see Kings today. A lot was to be outlined in this documentary, but many people thought I was just mad. At just 20, people said I was not mature or old enough to understand my own history. At the moment, there is no place where one can get real history of our people, we dont even know much about the Raimn Queen, Kgoshi Kgabo Moloto and those before him, Sekhukhune and those before him. I enquired to visit the Royal House in Moletjie, but was told the King is always busy. As people are flauting their history, understanding where they come from and how they contributed to the yesteryear struggle, most Pedi people can not say much as to what we offered the country. In the end, we just look like cowards who said yes to the colonisers without putting up a fight. The bravery of the Pedi people and their convictions look very suspect to me. The lack of tangible history is an even bigger worry and I will tell you now, not many can be bothered. My generation does not even know where we come from, does not know who Kgoshi Moloto reports to and how he got to the throne. I tried to sit down an Induna from my village with the hope of understanding our history, but all I could get was propaganda, praise for the king and nothing else. My people do not know what our Kings responsibiliteis are to the people, even if they believe in the system or not. It must also be mentioned that in my 23, 19 days, 08 hours, 36 minutes, 34 seconds and counting, I have never seen any Pedi King from Moletjie with my own eyes. Only newspapers and radio are my only hope to knowing the man. These people have isolated themselves from the many communities they supposedly serve. They never go to the people. Is this how it should be?
