A few years ago when we were stationed on Adak I was asked to be Santa. No problembthere since I am blessed with the physique, beard and jovial attitude of Santa baby. The part I missed was we would be coming in a C-130 AND I would be poking my head and upper torso out the the cockpit escape hatch as we landed. Adak is in Alaska just spitting distance from Russia in the aBearing Sea. I tell you that to emphasize how fricking cold it is. Add to that flying at a couple hundred miles an hour with a tech holding your legs in the plane as we land in a snow storm you can feel the excitement. We land and I am now frozen from the waist up. My eyes are literally frozen open. I grab my bag of goodies and mosey off the plane through the rear cargo door which lowers to expose me and my Elves, assorted Military personel in green camis and elf hats. I wave and ho ho ho to all the now big eyed children. Take my seat and the line is long. Each kid has a gift specifically for them from their parents. All kinds of requests and questiins. Finally near the end of the line I see my two not quite little ones and they come up and I ask the question What would you like for Christmas Corey says some toy or other and viola I hand him a package with said toy. Next comes Jessie, she is not so sure, Kim reasures her and up she comes, I ho ho ho and ask the question she just stares and leans in and says I know its you daddy but I won t tell anyone. Before I give her her present she grabs my face just staring haaaard, kisses me and away she goes, stops, waves and hops away. It is now really snowing hard, bearly see a couple of feet in front of you outside. I teared up and turned my head to wipe the tears away before the next munckin, he comes up and asks if Santa is OK, looks outside then at me and says dont worry Santa my Christmas wish is for you to make it home to the North Pole to be with Mrs. Claus and the elves and reindeer. I know you willake it cause my daddy is the best pilot on the island and he promised you would be home on time. Santa is just done, I give him his present he gives me a hug and away he went. Need less to say it was a great Christmas.
