A fictionalized account of the meeting with Jane appears in my first book and is repeated here. MY SPRING DIP WITH JANE FONDA [Back Story: I very much enjoyed re-calling and telling this story. In its re-telling is Sky Daddy engaged in ‘name-dropping’? Well, yes and no. I met every ‘Star’ mentioned in the story with the exception of Dustin and Abbie Hoffman. Many of you probably wouldn’t even consider ‘Abbie’ to have ever been a ‘star’. So, you can have your list but I will stick with mine.] As I recall I was already getting pretty full of myself. And I was already becoming a bit of a local celebrity. This late afternoon event in 1978 was another in a series of appearances I was making. On other similar occasions, I had already appeared with Jon Voit (who had starred in Coming Home with Jane Fonda and Midnight Cowboy opposite Dustin Hoffman). Tom Hayden was an anti-war activist and had been on trial with the other Chicago Seven along with the more flamboyant activist Abbie Hoffman. I was also heard and seen on local radio, TV, area newspapers and on a variety of political forums and panels. At this particular event, I began a relationship with an exotic political groupie. A beautiful dark skinned young woman with pitch black hair that extended well below her nicely defined behind. In months to come we would share more than a few dates lasting late into night. One date I remember with great fondness was a Peter Gabriel concert at the L.A. Forum. The hosts for this particular gathering were Milt and Marlene Kagan. Those present, including my dark-eyed beauty, were mostly from the local ‘Up-town’ Whittier Democrats Club. I believe their chapter was called the ‘Lincoln Democrats’. I had to be careful not to confuse this group with their arch rivals who were also Democrats and also area activists. This other local club was headed by a hatchet lady reminiscent of the infamous Tokyo Rose. This gathering was staged as a fundraiser for my 1st congressional campaign for the 33rd Congressional District. The featured draw for the event was Jane Fonda. Ms. Fonda offered up her brief remarks and even briefer introduction of me (which was not really necessary at all since those attending knew me much better than she did). I then spoke for several minutes. At the end of my remarks, Ms. Fonda and I retired to the spread of food in the dining room. Jane and I exchanged small talk over some delicious guacamole dip. Later, she gave me a book signed by both herself and her then husband Tom Hayden.
