A former colleague recently shared that her supervisor admonished her for advising the parents of a struggling English Learner to spend more time reading and talking with her. Why on earth would anyone object to that suggestion, you ask? Because the parents are not proficient in English. And the principal feared that ‘pushing Chinese’ would impede the students English development! This is an awful reminder that some educators still have significant knowledge gaps that can seriously impede student learning and well-being. Nevermind violate ethical and legal responsibilities for serving English Learners. Here we share a brief article about the benefits of parents speaking to their children in their mother tongue.
