A free glimpse into Darlington’s rich heritage Historical buildings and museums in Darlington will provide free tours of their venues in September as part of the Heritage Open Days initiative. Head of Steam: Head of Steam Railway Museum will be offering free entry on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September. Free guided tours of the museum by the Friends of the Museum will take place at 11am and 2pm on Saturday and 2pm on Sunday (tours last approximately an hour). Visitors will be able to see an exhibition by the Darlington Model Railway Club, find out about local railway heritage groups and visit the Carriage Works. On Sunday at 2pm, historian Stephen Nicholson will give a talk about ‘Darlington’s railway servicemen in the First World War’ – this talk is free, but booking is essential. Call 01325 460532 to book your place. Civic Theatre: Heritage Open Day tours take place on Friday 12 September and Sunday 14 September at 10am and 2pm. The tour will guide visitors around the backstage area, front of house and will include a talk on the theatre’s history. Tours must be booked in advance by calling 01325 486555. Tours have also been organised at Crown Street Library but these are now fully booked. Heritage Open Days are a national initiative which celebrate England’s architecture and culture by offering free access to historic buildings. Visit heritageopendays.org.uk for more information.
