A friend came over yesterday, and we spent some time doing things with, and related to, microscopes, including a stop at a local pond for a jar of pond scum and water. In one drop -- 22x22mm and about .2 mm thick -- I found the following: Phacus Euglena ?Chlamydomonas Giant spiral bacteria Rotifers Gastrotrichs Spirogyra Oscillatoria Pinnularia Navicula other diatoms Other filamentous algae At least 3 kinds of testate Euglena: Trachelomonas horrida (spiky test) T. volvocina (smooth test) T. of some other kind (sand-grain test and very long flagellum) A free swimming ciliate something like Opisthonecta or Scyphidia or a stalkless Carchesium, but not exactly. Peranema A new crustacean A chain of blue-green algae in jelly An unidentified ciliate, maybe Oxytricha or Uroleptus Some flagellate algae in a flat square, flagella pointing out. A large and very squirmy bag of chloroplasts with a long flagellum and no eyespot. A motile chain of brown algae (?diatoms?) that moved along its own length 2 Peramema eating the same Euglena. Peranema open very wide, then rasp and pierce the euglena surface with a stiff rod in their oral apparatus. Once in, they suck out as much ad they can, then scoop more out with their flagella. I had read about this, but seeing it is different. No amoebae. Amazing!
