A friend of mine and recent convert wrote this comment in response to the backlash he is seeing by many Muslims against the Happy British Muslims! video. Very sad and something to think about: When youre a convert in a small town...probably the only Muslim, you tend to try to make connections to the Muslim community where you can. I do that by following a lot of things online, whether it be here on Facebook, or whatever. Mostly what I get from doing that, is that everything is haram. I hear an imam, that I respect, is planning on taking a group to see Noah and then discuss the film...haram. I hear about a comic book written by a Muslim...haram. I watch a video of a bunch of happy people lip syncing and dancing...you guessed it, haram. This can be very disconcerting to someone, relatively, new to the faith. It could be even worse to someone trying to learn about Islam. Maybe its because I dont know every hadith or havent heard the lecture by this Shaykh or that Shaykh, but when I see a video like Happy British Muslims, it just makes me smile. I dont see anything wrong with it and then I start seeing all the bile that is spewed in the comments down below. I hope that as I grow in my faith, I dont let myself slip into the frame of mind that immediately looks for how EVERY situation, thought, or feeling goes against Islam. I hope that I can continue to think with my mind and feel with my heart.
