A friend of mine is organizing a cool conference and we thought that an interesting way to illustrate the topic would be to use my portrait of old Marilyn Monroe on the poster. He posted the draft to the PR department. Here is an intriguing response :) (...) I hope its ok if I offer an opinion on the poster. I think its offensive, playing into stereotypes around gender and aging. In particular, I think it will offend older women on campus. To be certain that this isnt just me having a weird reaction, I shared it confidentially with three people in my department. XXX said: What was he thinking of? It has a kind of rugby club feel to it. It looks like a pantomime dame. And probably offensive to transgender people. (...) YYY said: It is in bad taste and also its not very good. It neither speaks to what the lectures are about, nor the lecture series title. Are we what we are? The picture is exactly what it is: a bad photoshop-ed image. And the third colleague said: It strikes me as a bit of a cheap and tacky concept; and I can see how people might justifiably react against the aging/gender images (and implications), and be offended. (...). :)
