A friend of mine used to be an office worker at one of our local factories. She related to me how one day she had received a phone call from her Big Boss: Do you know where the steak is tender in Pretoria? he enquired. Oh gits...no, I dont, sir. she replied. After a pause and with an impatient edge in his voice, he asked: Well, can you find out? She put down the phone, looked over at her co-worker and asked her whether she were at all familiar with Pretoria. Her response was not very helpful: No, not really...why? Well, our Big Boss wants to eat out in Pretoria and asked me to find out which restaurant serves good steaks. she explained. A lot of flapping around ensued. The phone rang again. Im still waiting! he bellowed in her ear. Yes, sir...Im working on it. was her attempt to reassure him. She could feel that pesky nervous tic under her left eye as she listened to his frustrated rantings. He slammed down the phone. The co-worker suddenly remembered that her neighbours mother-in-law lived in Pretoria. She was still following up on this lead when the big man paid them an unprecedented visit. Have you come right, yet? he boomed. At this stage, my friend was sweating quite profusely. Nearly, sir... was her pathetic endeavour to placate him. He scanned her desk with his Big Boss eyes. Both his eyebrows shot up. Good God, woman, here it is! Right under your nose! he trumpeted. He grabbed a document off her desk, gave her a withering look, then stormed out of the office. An awkward silence fell over the room. And now...? asked the co-worker. In a little voice, my friend explained: He wanted the State Tender for Pretoria.
