As you could remember, one of the starting points of Meeting the Odyssey project was the theory of the Italian engineer and amateur historian Felice Vinci that Odysseus did not sail in the Mediterranean, but in the Baltic Sea (The Baltic Origins of Homer’s Epic Tales, 1995). We don’t know If Vinci was right or not. But somehow it could have influence on our perception of ‘classical’ and helps us to overcome stereotypes, and provoke a dialog between cultures and people. And we must say that ideas are flying in the air. There is happening Transformation. Antiquity was white – as white as marble! For hundreds of years, this fact has been one of the mainstays in the story of the origin of Western culture. This autumn’s special exhibition at the Glyptoteket in Copenhagen turns the idea of the white world of Antiquity upside down and shows that Greek and Roman sculpture were colorful to a degree. From the renaissance on, artists, art historians and philosophers viewed the pure white sculpture and architecture as an ideal guide to their own age and thoughts. White marble became synonymous with the noble and the spiritual – a guarantee of aesthetic, ethical and political superiority. Had Michelangelo and Thorvaldsen been aware that the white marble of Antiquity was merely a tenacious myth, Western figurative art would probably have looked radically different. After visiting the exposition you still can enjoy classical whiteness. But maybe you could see it a little differently. You can visit this outstanding exhibition in Copenhagen, one of the ‘stars’ on constellation map of our project, from 13/09/2014 - 07/12/2014 at NY CARLSBERG GLYPTOTEK. And also follow us and our artistic survey about modern Europe society. youtu.be/QARJIHMiMEM
