A friend who is intimately acquainted with the turmoil in Gaza, - TopicsExpress

A friend who is intimately acquainted with the turmoil in Gaza, who is within earshot of the sirens and explosions, who manifests astounding restraint as he reports his experiences, asks that we all refrain from circulating horrific images of the human suffering there. He says that spreading these images wont make the suffering any less, and that it is likely to engender feelings about the region as a whole that will just discourage initiatives to improve the situation. While I understand his frustration (and this is a good guy who I am talking about, I mean someone whose honesty and integrity I genuinely admire) it reminded me of how unfair it seemed to me back in the 1950s and 1960s when the national newscasts would broadcast images of racial strife in the south. Since I live here, I could look around my town and state and know those images were atypical. And thus, I believed, untrue. They were not.
