A funny thing happened on the way through airport security today! Had all my carry-ons going through the x-ray machine, did the stand with your arms bent over your head drill in the X ray booth, and was headed out to gather up my gear and put on my belt and shoes when a tall, intimidating blonde woman in full security uniform moved into a position in front of me and blocked me from moving forward! I stopped, a bit concerned and confused as she squinted at me and glared at my face, inspecting it carefully. After examining my face intently for a few moments she looked me in my now slightly scared eyes and said with a frown, Do I know you? Not sure how to respond, I stammered out, I dont know...do you? I nervously pulled up my belt less pants before I ended up mooning the travelers behind me as another moment or three of concerted frowning and scrutiny passed. Oh God...I thought, They are going to pull me aside and strip search me! Am I wearing clean underwear or the baggy stretched out ones I normally save for air travel to alleviate the hours of sitting with kiwis bunched up in close quarters! At least no one from the Comic Convention is around! Finally she asked with a raised eyebrow, Are you on TV? Slightly less worried now, I admitted that, yes, I was on the Jim Henson... ...Creature Shop challenge! she said, finishing my sentence! All smiles now, and giggling, she jumped up and down and shouted to her coworkers, I knew I recognized him! She turned back to me, still joyfully blocking my path and confided, I love that show! Now everybody in the security line is looking at me thinking I am some sort of wanted felon or disguised celebrity! Next her supervisor took me aside, surely convincing everyone that I was now in big trouble but proceeded to very kindly and enthusiastically discuss monster making, haunting societies in Portland and possibly having me come up to give a talk to them! He was an incredibly gracious and kind person and I had a great chat with him and thankfully never dropped my pants! It was an unexpected surprise and I now have a couple more friends on Facebook but I have to say, I am still not used to being recognized! Luckily the show has only engendered warm fuzzy feelings in both fans and pros and that is the best part of all! I love people and I love making things and I really love people who love making things! As we enter the High Holy days of Halloween Haunts and Pumpkin spiced everything its great to share that enthusiasm both online and in the real world with folks from all walks of life, including TSA workers who really arent scary at all...especially the ones who love monsters and Haunts!
